UJALI BAODI MANDU

UJALI BAODI- is a large scale water tank with a
                          staircase, well known with Anderi Baoli.
                           "Ujala" means bright
.                           surrounded by arch-shaped niches,
                            rooms and a staircase, this water tank is
                            a magnificent three-tiered building.
                             -Inside are a number of arcades and
                              landings for the convenience of water
                              carriers.
                             - northern top is a water lift
                            -southern top is a pavilion for royal
                             guards to keep watch on the water.

Malwa Sultanate (from 1392 to 1562)
Ghuri Dynasty 

USE- supply water within the royal buildings, mainly to the Hammam.
NAME-it was having sweet flavor of its water, smell like champak flower, this well is called as Champa Baodi.
TAHAKHANA-A subterranean path goes down the well and connects itself with a labyrinth of vaulted
                          rooms, known as "Tahkhana"
                          There are inner compartments in the lower storey.
                 USE-Connected with the well and pavilion on the bank of Talao that even in the worst parts of
                         the summer the rooms were constantly kept cool and comfortable with gentle breeze
                         flowing from the pavilion to the rooms through the gallery and the finally passing out of top
                         of the well.

NIKANTHA PALACE


THE NILKANTHA  PALACE


-present structure was built on the shrine of lord shiva
-steps-61- leading to court
-court-enclosed by rooms to its west,south and east  
           north portion is kept open for enjoying view of
           valley
          -center-fine cistern-water is supplied by channel
           or cascade
-rooms-east and west-floor levels are higher than court
                                     -floor levels lower than south room
             -south-octagonal cistern
             -fed by water from tank on back of building
-walls-inscriptions of the time of akbar cointaning
           interesting verses

-originaly-a tomb of some noble
-repaired in 1956A.D.
-plinth-0.9m
-hieght-3.9m of the total building
-rooms-in the basement-in south
            -use-servants and pilgrims
-walls-brackets and mouldings in hindu style
-interior-rim of dome-niches set with deep blue tiles
-NOTE- it is now private property of maharaja of dhar

         and rooms of which traces are seen
-one of the rooms at eastern ends-coloured enamel and  paintings give faint idea about originality of buildings

-dedicated to darya khan-an employer in the court of sultan mahmud 2
-faced with red masonary and decorated with coloured enamels
-domes-small-at 4 corners surrounding the main dome
             -remind of tomb of hoshang shah ,but here dome
              is rather clumsy
-plan-square
-hall-with arches built across the corners to support the
       dome
-arches-sets with blue tiles
-NOTE-beautiful stone trellis-work fitted into the walls-use-to admit light and air
-as there are many ruined buildings ,once containing gardens and other pleasure houses.

                     octagonal pavilion from which one can view
                     beautiful garden whose traces are still seen

                    -south-consist of hall with 2 rooms
                               -there are openings on wall of hall
                               which provide excess to another court

--in reality it is tomb-though it is called a mahal
-it was her house in which she was buried

-the mahal,more properly called mausoleum

-towers-traces at south-east and north-east corners there stood a beautiful pavilion

                 in elephant –tusk brackets supporting them

            -use—for staff and pilgrims
-dome-surmounted the porch
           -not in existance
-arches-built across the corners-changed the plan into
          octagon –produced disharmony in general design
         of porch
-ceiling-western colonnade consists of 3 small domes
             ,with flat or star shaped arches
-hall-below domes are square
-wall-west-carved with niches
        -mihrabs being adorned with blue and bands of
         floral designs

- tower (northeast) was raised of 7 storied-commemorate his victory over the rana of mewar.
-only its basement of height of 9.8m exists
-interior-rests on square of 19.9m
-walls -3.5m thick-so collapsed after some generations

--for carvings and calligraphy Persians artists were involved
--sarcophagus was placed on beautifully carved yellow marble base which still exists
-facing-in marbel of white,yellow and black added charm
-dome expected of having height of 7.6m

          visited the place in 1659 A.D.to pay homage to

               by arches and then into 16 sides through
               squinches-as to bear the load of the dome

             -only 3 of which are in marbel
             -west-colonnade with 3 rows of pillars dividing

        guards
-once converted into rest house for visitors-because-its terrace commands beautiful view .

-jahaz mahal- ship palace—as it was on narrow strip of land between the waters of the munj and kapur tanks that presents the sight of a ship anchored in between .
-it was said that this was built by jahangir
-it reflects the spirit of its romantic beauty and joyous hilarity so characteristic of the palace life of muslim rulers of India.
-plan-rectangle-121.9m by 15.2 m and height of 9.7 m
-plan at ground floor-halls-3-corridors in between –narrow rooms at extreme ends.(north side)
-cistern-supported by colonnade on three sides
              -beyond northern rooms
              -landing is provided below the top margin for   
               the convenience of those not knowing to swim.
-pavilion-at back of each hall
               -the one behind the central hall is larger in      
               dimensions
              - domical ceiling of blue and yellow tiles
              -others are smaller in size and are of stone
                frame work comprising of arched opening.
              -use—ladies of harem, curtains might have been hung.
-southern rooms-contains water channel
                             -use—it supplies water to other end
-terrace-approached by lengthy  flight of steps
             -pavilions-2-at the ends-larger in dimensions
             -divided into 3 parts—central one having
              domical roof a little higher than pyramidal roofs
              over the side compartments.
             -pavilion –central one-having similar projection
              of domed pavilion –its inside and outside are of
              blue and yellow tiles and traces of paintings in   
              floral motifs are also there.
NOTE-here the surfaces of the wall and roof are covered with a thick coat of plaster, on the upper façade of the building.

-hall-big-6 arched openings on both sides+pillars
-windows –beautifuly carved—use-to admit light and air
-roofs-massive+ vaulted-not in present
-walls(side)- 2.7 m thick
-buttressess-to support wall-indirectly counteract the huge ceiling load.
-Steps-main one are meant for kings
          -sloping meant for royal ladies to go up in   
           palanquin or on pony or on elephant scince it was
           populary known as hathi-chadhao.
-they reduced ornamentation to minimum as compared to other buildings which used many coloured tiles..thought it was majestic in appearance.
